Once you have created your web site locally on your hard disk and tested with Microsoft personal webserver you will be ready to upload it to your web domain. Please note that index.htm is the default page name - you may have a different one on your server.

Please note that you can not FTP to the FrontPage server - this will not work - you must use the publish option (not the publishing wizard). There are not FTP accounts set up for users on the server as ftping pages bypasses FrontPage - as a result indexes for searches will become inaccurate and other problems can occur. The publish function used by FrontPage to transfer pages and files to the server is not an FTP protocol it is httpd based and uses CGI on both servers to upload the information.

You should choose the 'publish' option from the file menu . It will then ask you for your destination web server - this will be your web domain i.e. 'www.myco.com' (please remember that you must be on line for this part) or your IP address i.e. 195.102.35.15 . You should then leave the name of the destination web server blank if you want to publish to the root web, or place the name of the sub web if you wish to publish to a subweb. The add to existing FrontPage web box should be checked if publishing to root web (we have created a blank root web for you) or a web that you have previously created.

Once you have selected OK it will prompt you for the name and password for the root web. The name will be your web user id which usually starts with 3 w's i.e. 'wwwcorp' , the password will be the password given along side this on the joining letter. Do be careful when entering the userid and password as these are case sensitive.

The above process will be repeated when you have updated or added material to your web site, FrontPage will only transfer the new material - and not the entire site. If you wish it to FrontPage will also keep a joblist for you to do, and will find problems such as spelling mistakes and broken links in your web pages. Details of these functions can be found in the documentation provided with FrontPage. Please do note that you are responsible for backing up your own website.
